New for 2012 @ The Smithy is David Starley. David is from Saltaire and paints traditional oil on canvas. His technique for thick textured paint ideally captures the Yorkshire landscape.
David first studied art at Sydney University whilst working in a steel foundry, but then chose to follow a career in archaeology, before becoming firmly focused on painting. He is currently based in the World Heritage site of Saltaire.
David works with traditional oil paints, very thickly applied (impasto) with a painting knife; a technique that produces a three-dimension, almost sculpted, image. This not only adds great depth, but produces a surface that responds subtly to the changing light in the environment in which the work is displayed.
Subjects explore the environment which surrounds us, including the natural landscape of Yorkshire and its historic buildings and monuments. Many of my current paintings were inspired by the spectacular Dales High Way, a 92 mile walk from Saltaire to Appleby in Westmorland.
